Dinkelacker-Schwaben Bräu Taps into SAP S/4HANA

Heidelberg & Stuttgart, June 14, 2022 – Dinkelacker-Schwaben Bräu GmbH & Co. KG has successfully moved to SAP S/4HANA. The move makes the Stuttgart-based brewery one of the first in Germany to work with the next generation SAP software. SNP Schneider-Neureither & Partner SE, a world-leading provider of software solutions for digital transformation processes and automated data migrations in the SAP environment, carried out the project remotely in just twelve months. This was made possible by SNP’s selective data migration approach (BLUEFIELD) and the data transformation platform CrystalBridge®.

Based in the heart of Stuttgart, the family-owned brewery had been working successfully with an SAP solution for over 20 years. Yet the technology behind the system landscape was no longer up to date: “We didn’t want to be stuck with SAP ECC, which is being phased out, but rather move with the times and be a pioneer for German breweries,” says Tanja Drews, Head of IT and Organization at Dinkelacker-Schwaben Bräu GmbH & Co. KG. That is why the brewery decided to migrate to SAP S/4HANA.

Three options were considered for Dinkelacker-Schwaben Bräu’s move to SAP S/4HANA. The greenfield approach was ruled out because the brewery has a large number of in-house developments within the SAP solution. Furthermore, a step-by-step migration involving various pre-projects and sub-projects was not a viable solution for Dinkelacker-Schwaben Bräu. The project would have been too long and too expensive.

Instead, the brewery decided to move to SAP S/4HANA using a one-step approach. This combined several sub-projects while avoiding several long and costly pre-projects: During the transformation project, SNP harmonized the master data, performed all the technical updates, introduced a new chart of accounts and the New General Ledger, completed the move to the HANA database, and introduced SAP S/4HANA. On top of that, the new SAP system is now Unicode-capable too. “If we hadn’t been able to carry out the transformation selectively and in one step, we wouldn’t have an SAP solution today. It was the only chance we had to keep SAP,” explains Tanja Drews.

The brewery benefited from prepackaged content and standardized procedures, which significantly reduced the project work required for the migration. The project started in February 2020. SNP carried out the transformation project completely remotely and during ongoing business operations. The SAP solution went live on schedule after only 12 months and within budget.

“Since our go-live, the new SAP S/4HANA system has been running seamlessly the entire time. We conducted intensive tests in advance and let our users continue to work with the old interface. And the 30 or so interfaces worked straightaway too,” says Tanja Drews, extremely satisfied with the result. During the project, the project team also integrated the SAP Business Technology Platform. The SAP BTP includes a cloud solution for the excise duty or beer tax, which is particularly important for the brewing industry. The solution enables Dinkelacker-Schwaben Bräu to analyze goods movements that are taxable, calculate the beer tax and provide the forms to the tax authorities.

“Dinkelacker-Schwaben Bräu is one of the first breweries in Germany to successfully work with SAP S/4HANA,” explains Thilo Nagler, Managing Director and Vice President of Sales CEU at SNP. Tanja Drews adds: “We have made the leap to SAP S/4HANA and created the ideal basis for our future success.”
